Howard M. Goodman Fellowship 2023

Application deadline: October 12, 2022 –5:00PM

This is an endowed fellowship established by the MGH Department of Molecular Biology in honor of the founding Chief of the Department, Dr. Howard M. Goodman. The award is intended to further the careers of outstanding independent young scientists, who would normally hold the position of Assistant Professor, and have demonstrated the potential to rise to a leadership position in their chosen field.  Applicants who hold a full-time appointment in any MGH Department and are primarily engaged in research, are eligible to apply. To see a list of previous awardees please click here

One award per year will be made. The award is $100,000 per year, plus 20% indirect costs, for two years and is effective April 1, 2023.

The award recipient will be asked to present their research at the annual Celebration of Science which will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

  • Applicants must have a full-time MGH appointment at the time of application and during the entire award period.
  • Applicants must be within five years since their first independent position at MGH (i.e. January 1, 2017 to date).
    • Time spent on parental leave (i.e. the birth or adoption of a child) does not count as part of this five-year limit. ECOR will allow an extension of eligibility to those applicants who took parental leave after being offered an independent position.  Applicants who took parental leave should explain their situation in the application form.
  • The applicant needs to have demonstrated clear independence and would normally hold the position of Assistant Professor or have been an Instructor for a period of time with a demonstrable independent publication record.
  • Applicants must not yet have reached the level of Associate Professor and should not be a PI on more than one R01.
  • Applicants from any MGH Department are eligible to apply.
  • At Mass General Hospital we believe that because of diversity we excel.  Therefore, women and URM candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications will be evaluated by a committee of faculty appointed by ECOR, to consist of members of the Department of Molecular Biology, ECOR leadership, SRRP and members from other MGH Departments. Candidates will not be provided with critiques for their application.

The following six items must be included:
