Howard M. Goodman Fellowship 2017

DESCRIPTION OF THE FELLOWSHIP

This is an endowed fellowship established by the MGH Department of Molecular Biology in honor of the founding Chief of the Department, Dr. Howard M. Goodman. The award is intended to further the careers of outstanding independent young scientists who have demonstrated the potential to rise to a leadership position in their chosen field.  Applicants who hold a full-time appointment in any MGH Department and are primarily engaged in research, are eligible to apply. To see a list of previous awardees please click here

AWARD AMOUNT

One award per year will be made. The award is for two years at $150,000, plus 15% indirect costs, per year and is effective April 1, 2017.  

The award recipient will be asked to present their research at the annual Celebration of Science which will be held from 9:00am - 12:00pm on Wednesday April 5, 2017.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must have a full-time MGH appointment at the time of application and during the entire award period.
  • Applicants must have been offered an independent position at MGH in 2012 or later. 
  • The applicant needs to have demonstrated clear independence and would normally hold the position of Assistant Professor or have been an Instructor for a period of time with a demonstrable independent publication record.
  • Applicants must not yet have reached the level of Associate Professor, and should not be a PI on more than one R01. 
  • Applicants from any MGH Department are eligible to apply.


REVIEW PROCESS

Applications will be evaluated by a committee of faculty appointed by ECOR, to consist of members of the Department of Molecular Biology, ECOR leadership, SRRP and members from other MGH Departments. Candidates will not be provided with critiques for their application.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following four items must be included:

  1. A current biosketch in the NIH format (not an HMS CV). Click here for a sample NIH biosketch
  2. Cover letter (1-page limit), stating the nature of appointment at MGH, describing independent accomplishments, and discussing expected position over the next two years.
  3. Summary of research goals (2-page limit, excluding references).
  4. Layman's summary of your research work (200 words) 

HOW TO APPLY

ECOR accepts all applications online via the ECOR Online Grant Management Portal.  This user-friendly system will allow MGH researchers to submit electronic applications to ECOR. The system has been designed to allow users to:

  • Create a personal profile, which will auto-populate your future ECOR applications
  • Assign a delegate to submit applications on your behalf (optional)
  • View current calls and apply to open opportunities
  • Save and edit current applications in progress
  • Submit completed applications
  • View all your ECOR applications that have been submitted via the online grants system 

  Instructions for Applying Online:

  1. Create your account: Login using your Partners credentials and fill out the profile information.
  2. Complete the application: Once your profile is complete, you will automatically progress through the online application. If you cannot complete the application at one time, “save” the application and return to it at a later time to finish. Before submitting your application, you will have the ability to make changes to the application.
  3. Submit your application: Once you have completed the application click on the “submit” button at the bottom of the page. Once you submit it, you will not be able to make further changes unless you send a request to ECOR (note that once the deadline passes, request to make changes will not be accepted).

Useful tips:

  • To avoid losing your work, remember to save frequently
  • You can only upload PDF documents. Limit characters to A-Z, a-z and 0-9 when naming PDF documents.  Do not use periods, commas or dashes in the file name.  
  • If you previously created a profile, please ensure your information is current
