ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. PEAS Enrollment Required for all Apple Macintosh Products

The IT Asset Management Standards for Apple Macintosh Products (EISS- 8.1d) are effective as of August 1, 2015. The standards require all institutionally owned or issued Macintosh devices be enrolled in the Partners Enterprise Apple Support (PEAS) program. Individuals have 90 days from August 1, 2015 to comply with the new standard. Click here to read more.

2. Core of the Week: Peptide/Protein Core

Peptide/Protein Core
Director: Ashok Khatri
Location: 149 13th St. Room #4-314, Charlestown, MA

The primary goal of the Peptide/Protein Core Facility is to provide advanced peptide/protein technology services to the MGH research community. The Core Facility, established originally as a resource for the Endocrine Unit and the Partners AIDS Research Center is now formally established as an institution-wide resource. The Core Facility primarily provides services of peptide synthesis and purification. It also provides protein/peptide sequencing, amino acid analysis and mass spectral analysis. Investigators from throughout the MGH consult with the staff of the Core Facility to facilitate the most effective use of the resources.

Currently, the Core Facility is supported by NIH program grants to Endocrine Unit and the Partners AIDS Research Center, as well as by charges to individual groups of services rendered. It is expected that these sources of funding will remain the prime support for the Core Facility.

By supporting the Core Facility, the MGH investigators will ensure a very high quality service to the entire research community. This will result in faster and more efficient service, significant cost savings, and consultative services.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

1. Tosteson & Fund for Medical Discovery (FMD) Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards for Basic and Clinical Research

Applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Tosteson and Fund for Medical Discovery (FMD) Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards!

What is it?
The Tosteson & FMD Awards are intended to support junior investigators (MD and PhD fellows/postdocs) at Massachusetts General Hospital pursuing either fundamental (basic) or clinical research.

The ECOR Subcommittee on Review of Research Proposals (SRRP) reviews the applications and selects the awardees. The top three applicants will receive Tosteson Awards - named for the longtime Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Medicine - and the remaining awardees receive FMD awards.

How much is each award?
The awards are $40,000 for one year, plus applicable fringe benefits and 15% indirect costs.

When is the deadline?
Thursday, October 1, 2015 - 5:00 PM

2. Call for Applications – Pilot/Feasibility Study Grants

Application Due Date: October 13, 2015

The Center for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (CSIBD) at MGH is a multidisciplinary program funded by NIDDK. Now in its 25th year, the CSIBD promotes the research of both basic and clinical scientists in a wide range of areas. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Translational Human Immunology (including IBD, mucosal and immune responses)
  • Immune and Inflammatory Responses (including mucosal immunology, innate immune recognition, antigen presentation and adaptive immunity, and novel immune cell subsets)
  • Microbial Pathogenesis (including bacterial-epithelial cell interactions and host responses to commensal vs. invasive luminal flora).
  • Epithelial Cell Biology (including regulation of stem cells, epithelial cell polarity, and membrane biology)
  • Non-invasive Mapping of Gut Inflammation
  • Molecular Mechanism of Gastrointestinal Cancer

GOALS: Funds have been made available to support Pilot/Feasibility Study grants consistent with the overall goals of the Center. The goals of the CSIBD’s Pilot/Feasibility Study Program are to support:

  • Young investigators (senior fellows* or junior faculty) working in areas that will improve our understanding of basic processes relevant to inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Established investigators initiating a new area of research in their laboratories relevant to mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel disease.

The objective of a Pilot/Feasibility Study grant is to enable an investigator to complete sufficient preliminary studies to enable successful application for more substantial funding from other sources. Pilot/Feasibility Study grants are not intended to supplement ongoing or currently funded projects. Participation in another digestive disease center precludes eligibility for these grants.

FUNDING: The CSIBD will fund three grants of up to $35,000 each (direct costs) through this program. Pilot/Feasibility Study awards are made for a one-year period; a second year will be considered on a competing basis. Awards made to institutions other than MGH will not receive indirect costs.

APPLICATIONS: May be obtained from Lindsay Ware (617-643-2421 or lware@mgh.harvard.edu), CSIBD Administrative Office, located in the GI Unit, Jackson 7-706 at Massachusetts General Hospital or downloaded from www.massgeneral.org/CSIBD/grants. The deadline for receipt of applications is October 13th, 2015.

*Fellow must be in the final year of training and must have a documented commitment to a faculty appointment by the sponsoring unit or department.

3. Pilot funding: Up to $50,000 for Proposals in Schizophrenia or Human Oral Microbiome

ReSourcing Big Data Pilot Funding Opportunities
As a follow-up to the successful ReSourcing Big Data Symposium held in March, up to $50,000 is available for translational research projects in two areas: schizophrenia or the human oral microbiome

To learn more and apply, you must attend an educational event on September 16.

Proposal applications due mid-October; more information on these opportunities can be found below and on the website.

For more information on either of these opportunities or the education events, please contact us.

4. Call for Pre-Proposals - Sanofi iAwards Program

The Sanofi iAwards program brings together 7 top academic research institutions across the country and aims to support research ideas early in the translational path, at the transition between basic research and first proof of concept. Annual funding for each award granted by Sanofi will be ca. $100k total cost representing  $57.5k direct cost and may be extended for one additional year at a similar funding level.  Successful projects have the potential to grow into sponsored research agreements with significantly increased funding levels and timelines.

The Sanofi iAwards Program is expected to fund 24 projects per year for 3 years across the 7 participating academic entities: John Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University Medical Center, Columbia University, Brigham and Women`s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Texas System. It will be subject to the oversight of a Joint Scientific Steering Committee (JSSC) comprised of 2 to 6 representatives from Sanofi and 1 representative from each of the academic institutions participating in the iAward Program. Our representative will be Maurizio Fava, MD, MGH Research Institute, Clinical Research Division Director. Each JSSC member will sign a confidentiality acknowledgement. The notification of pre-proposals chosen to be pursued as detailed proposals will be done by Sanofi. The JSSC will review the invited detailed proposals and make recommendations for funding by Sanofi.

The conditions related to program's governance and management, intellectual property, confidentiality  have been negotiated and agreed by all Parties.

For additional information and all questions please contact our Coordinating Team: Gabriela Apiou, PhD, MGH Research Institute, Director for Translational Research Training and Development (gapiou@mgh.harvard.edu) and Seema Basu, PhD, Partners HealthCare Innovation, Director for Licensing and Strategic Collaborations (ssbasu@partners.org).

Please send pre-proposals by email to both Gabriela Apiou and Seema Basu by September 4, 2015. This will allow the Partners HealthCare Innovation Office to complete the uploading process and meet the Sanofi deadline (September 10, 2015). Please limit the total length of your pre-proposal to a maximum of 3 pages.  This does not include the cover page or biographical sketch. All information in the pre-proposal should be non-confidential.

Please click here to view the call. To download the template, click here.
