ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
1. COVID-19 Testing for Asymptomatic MGH Employees in the Charlestown Navy Yard

We are pleased to report that on-site COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic (no COVID symptoms) MGH employees will be expanded to the Charlestown Navy Yard free of charge.  The testing is for asymptomatic employees who do not fall into the categories listed below.

  • Symptomatic employees who have even minor symptoms of COVID-19 should stay home and contact the Occupational Health Services (OHS) Call Center at 617-724-8100.
  • Asymptomatic employees with confirmed exposures (occupational or community) should contact the OHS Call Center at 617-724-8100 to be scheduled for testing.
  • Testing for clinical reasons (for example, if an employee requires pre-admission or pre-procedural testing) will continue to be ordered by your provider and should not be completed at the Employee Testing Center.

Testing Location - CNY 114 Cafeteria (1st Floor)

Testing will be done on a walk-in basis.  No appointment is needed.  Your employee ID is required.  We do ask if the line is long, you come back at a later time.

The testing process will be managed through the Labpass web portal.  You will need to set up an account in Labpass.  Registration for each test will be done at the testing site.

  • Account activation/set up and results delivery will be managed through secure patient accounts in Labpass. Visit Apollo for more information about using Labpass.  Note: Information in Apollo on scheduling an appointment in Labpass is not applicable for the CNY walk-in site.

2. Abstract Submission for the 2021 Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) Virtual Poster Session

ECOR is accepting abstracts from research staff and trainees who are interested in exhibiting their research

Deadline for submission:  Wednesday, February 3, 2021

The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) Virtual Poster Session gives researchers the opportunity to create a compelling visual display of their work and present it to some of the best scientific minds in the nation. The poster session is an essential part of the two-day meeting, which highlights excellence in research at MGH. Posters of Distinction will be chosen to receive a $1,000 travel award to a scientific meeting.

A review panel will select a group of finalists from the submitted abstracts. Those finalists will be required to present their poster in order to be considered for the travel award.

ELIGIBILITY
Awards will be restricted to trainees and research associates (i.e., fellows, graduate students, and research staff). The abstract submitter must have a full time appointment at MGH.

AWARD TERMS

  • Each Poster of Distinction will be awarded $1,000
  • The award may be used to defray the costs of travel and lodging for a scientific meeting.
  • The award may be used to cover the costs of event registration, especially for virtual conferences that do not require travel.
  • Note: the awardee may not use the travel award for an event that has already occurred.

SAC VIRTUAL POSTER SESSION

Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
This year, the poster session will be held virtually via the Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting online portal. Completed posters must be uploaded to the SAC event portal in advance of the event. Details regarding the format and instructions for uploading posters are forthcoming. Poster presenters will use Zoom or Microsoft Teams to communicate with attendees.

Abstracts on any type of research are eligible for submission and authors may only submit ONE abstract.

5. Confidentiality of NIH Peer Review Process

With the start of the 2021 NIH peer review calendar, we are joining with Mike Lauer, NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, and his colleagues in the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) to remind you of the importance of confidentiality to the integrity of the NIH Peer Review Process.  Study section members, NIH-supported investigators and staff, and Institutional Officials all have a role to play in fostering confidentiality of applications and the associated study section discussions. 

Before gaining access to applications, proposals, or other meeting materials, reviewers are required to read the NIH Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Rules: Information for Reviewers and certify in a Confidentially Agreement that they fully understand and will comply with the confidential nature of the review process.  Reviewers are expected to notify immediately the Scientific Review Officer (SRO) managing the review of the relevant application if they are contacted for purposes of obtaining or exchanging information outside of CSR channels. Preserving peer review integrity is an integral part of maintaining the public’s trust in science, something critically important today, in addition to safeguarding our fellow scientists’ unpublished ideas and intellectual property.

Last month Mike Lauer published several peer review case studies in the Open Mike section of the NIH online publication Extramural Nexus.  The CSR hosts an extensive website with peer review policies and information on how junior faculty can become reviewers.  We have included links to these sites below and encourage current reviewers and those interested in becoming reviewers to take a moment to peruse them.

6. Harvard Catalyst Clinical Trial Design Course—Applications Now Open

Clinical Trial Design (CTD) is an opportunity for new clinical investigators, who have an idea for development of a clinical trial, to participate in an intensive nine-week course. Participants will learn the fundamentals of clinical trial design, including instructions on how to design a protocol, information on IRB and regulatory topics, and on trial implementation. Additional course topics include statistical analysis, budgeting, and data management.

1. Biobank Portal

The Partners Biobank Portal is a tool that links consented subjects from the Partners Biobank with their health care data from the electronic medical record (EMR) and allows researchers to request clinical samples for these subjects. 

This course will provide an introduction to the use of the Biobank Portal application for clinical research, including the review of healthcare data, types of samples available, genomic information and requesting data. The course is geared toward investigators and staff at all levels interested in the utility and information of the Biobank Portal for research.

6. ThuRsday R's Day: Weekly Training Sessions

These weekly sessions are a mix of training and show-and-tell for learning useful R tips just like the Enterprise Research IS R User Group Meeting. R is a free and open programming language for statistical computing, data analysis, and graphical visualization. In this weekly meeting, one small topic is covered at one time (45 min - 1 hr) in a very friendly, relaxed way so that many beginners can join without any difficulties. Topic and level of difficulty will be announced a couple of days before so that you know what to expect ahead. No need to register. 9. Inaugural Anne Klibanski Visiting Lecture Series

Given the success of the Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholar Award program, the Center for Faculty Development has created the Anne Klibanski Visiting Lecturer Series to support and advance the careers of women thanks to the opportunity to present their work. These lectures bring together faculty members from institutions that have hosted Anne Klibanski Scholars with those MGH scholars on topics that overlap both research areas. Faculty from the outside host institutions are also invited to present on their own. The lectures are open to both the MGH community and that of the host institution.

Our first lecturer, Mitzi Gonzales, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases / Department of Neurology at UT Health San Antonio. Her research focuses on identifying the mechanisms and biomarkers of advanced age-related cognitive decline and dementia to aid timely diagnosis, prevent progression, and advance treatment discovery.

13. Independent Learning Opportunity: The Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research: Virtual Nursing Research Poster Showcase

October 21, 2020, through March 31, 2021

This course will allow the learner to select from a field of 58 posters consisting of Quality Improvement, Original Research, and Evidence-Based Practice to review, reflect upon, and describe how the learned material will impact their nursing practice. Review of total 4 posters are required to receive 1 contact hour.  Learners can repeat the 4-poster review for additional nursing contact hours until all 58 posters are reviewed by re-registering on CVent.

2. 2021 MGH Physician and/or Scientist Development Award

Applications for grants are invited by the MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), and the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR). 

Four Year Award for Investigators who are Underrepresented in Academic Medicine

Fundamental, Clinical, Translational, and Health Services investigators are all eligible

What is the Award?
The MGH Physician/Scientist Development Award (PSDA) is designed for MD and/or PhD investigators at MGH who are considered underrepresented in academic medicine (UIM). This Award is intended to provide transitional funding for support in the development of physicians and scientists underrepresented in academic medicine, and thereby increase opportunities for UIM researchers to advance to senior positions in academic medicine at MGH.  This award is a key faculty initiative of the CDI. We encourage applicants to engage with the center and learn more about our programs and other initiatives: www.massgeneral.org/cdi. The CDI will evaluate the need for this Award on a regular basis.

Am I UIM (Underrepresented in Medicine)?
For the purposes of the PSDA, MGH follows the definition of underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research (UIM) of the NIH and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).  UIM groups may include Latino/ Hispanic (including Brazilian), African-American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Natives, among others. Please note that Asians are not considered UIM, UNLESS they are underrepresented relative to the population MGH serves, e.g., Cambodian or Laotian.

How much is the award?
Up to $180,000 plus 15% indirect costs will be awarded to be spent over a three or four-year period, with a maximum of $60,000 plus indirect costs per year for 3 year awards and a maximum of $45,000 plus indirect costs per year for 4 year awards. As approved by the MGH Chiefs of Service, the four awards will be funded via a 50% cost share between ECOR and the applicant's department. Cost sharing exceptions will be considered if departmental resources are an issue.

3. NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

Fostering diversity in the scientific research workforce is a key component of the NIH strategy to identify, develop, support and maintain the quality of our scientific human capital NOT-OD-20-031.

This administrative supplement is designed to provide support for research experiences for individuals from diverse backgrounds throughout the continuum from high school to the faculty level. Continuation of this program in the future will depend on the evaluation of the career outcomes of the supported individuals as well as continuing assessments of the diversity of the scientific workforce.

4. 2021 Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards

The Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards are part of the historic $200 million commitment from the Blavatnik Family Foundation to HMS, will help propel the School’s mission of transforming health through curiosity-driven research that stimulates the development of new therapies and the creation of new tools to diagnose, prevent, and treat disease.

What is the Award?
The intent of these awards is to accelerate the development of therapeutics throughout HMS and its affiliated hospitals, with the goal of achieving licensable intellectual property and potentially creating new companies within a two-year time frame. The awards program will help investigators overcome obstacles to commercial translation by funding promising technologies and positioning them to attract venture and industry partners. Awards will include significant financial resources in addition to therapeutic development and project management expertise.

All faculty at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor in the Faculty of Medicine (i.e., faculty at HMS, HMS-affiliated institutions, and HSDM) are eligible to apply for funding as lead PI. The Blavatnik Family Foundation will provide the funds for the awards, which will be administered by Harvard via a grant to the PI’s institution and funded at a level of up to $1 million (total costs) over a period of two years.

The inaugural cycle of the Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards program was successfully completed in 2020. It is anticipated that up to five new awards will be made in the 2021 program cycle, with additional annual program cycles anticipated in 2022 and 2023.

5. Breast Cancer Alliance – Exceptional Project Grants

Letters of intent are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Breast Cancer Alliance Exceptional Project Grant.

What are they?
The Breast Cancer Alliance invites clinical doctors and research scientists at any stage of their careers whose primary focus is breast cancer to apply for an Exceptional Project Grant. This award recognizes creative, unique and innovative research.

MGH is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 LOIs to the sponsor.

How much is the award?
The award is $100,000 for one year. Administrative costs, which are included in the $100,000 award, must be limited to 8% of grant funds. ECOR policy states that for MGH investigators selected through a competitive process as the institutional nominee in which the grant will bring in less than 15% indirect cost (IDC), ECOR will cover the IDC gap up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.

When is the deadline?  

MGH letter of intent deadline: Monday, March 1, 2021 at 5:00pm
BCA letter of intent deadline: Monday, April 5, 2021

What are the internal guidelines?
Please submit a 1-2 page letter of intent, along with a NIH biosketch, to ecor@mgh.harvard.edu

Be sure to include the following information:

  1. Applicant's name, job title, and the applicant's contact information
  2. State the project title and hypothesis, outline the research aim(s) and methods
  3. A brief discussion of the project's potential impact

In the event that there are more than 2 applicants, the internal LOI will be used to assess if a review and selection process will be needed. ECOR will notify all interested applicants by March 22, 2021.

The Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant supports an innovative project in an area of science that represents a change in research direction for an early stage investigator (ESI) and for which no preliminary data exist.

7. Gerstner Family Foundation Scholar Award

Applications are now being accepted by the Department of Psychiatry for the
Gerstner Family Foundation Scholar Award

The Department of Psychiatry requests applications for the 2021 Gerstner Scholar Award, a competitive grant award geared to newly or recently trained MDs or PhDs who seek to pursue careers as clinician-researchers or researchers in the areas of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or ADHD plus related disorders. Past awards have included projects related to screening, mechanisms, basic science/translational, and intervention studies. Funded by The Gerstner Family Foundation, the Award Program honors the memory and the research interests of the late Louis V. Gerstner III. A minimum of two, 2-year awards yearly will be granted.

Award Parameters This is a two-year competitive award for MD- and PhD-level junior faculty who are within five years of completing training. Qualified applicants will have an interest in ADHD and related co-morbidities and a demonstrated commitment to clinical research through past projects and publications. Special attention will be paid to applications with specific interest in the overlap of ADHD and addictive disorders.

  • Applicants must have faculty appointments at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
  • Awards will be for $75,000 per year for two years and may be used for an original research project or to broaden or supplement an existing project. Funding may be used for direct salary and fringe support of the Scholar or for related costs such as research assistant time/effort, biostatistical services, neuroimaging, genetic analysis and travel to scientific meetings.
  • Scholars will conduct clinical or translational research related to core ADHD and/or ADHD plus comorbidity.
  • Scholars will spend at least 50 percent of their time in the conduct of clinical research.
  • Scholars will be mentored by midlevel or senior faculty at the MGH.

9. Thinking about an EBP, QI, or research project? Special funding opportunity for DNP & advanced practice nurses!

The Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses’ Alumni Association (MGHNAA) Grant, supported by and named for the MGH School of Nursing Nurses Alumni Association with oversight by the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research at MGH, provides 2 years of funding for an EBP, QI, or research project.  Up to $3000 is available to implement a project to advance nursing science and improve outcomes for the nursing workforce, patients, or families.

10. The Connell Nursing Research Scholars Program - 2020-2021

The goal of the Connell Nursing Research Scholars (CNRS) program is a Post -Doctoral research-intensive experience designed to promote the advancement of interdisciplinary patient/family care at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) through nursing research. The Nursing Research Scholars invited to participate in this program will have dedicated time each week to advance a research agenda consistent with the strategic goals of MGH Patient Care Services and their personal research focus. Ultimately, having time devoted to the conduct of research and clinical investigation will enable each scholar the opportunity to actively publish, expand research expertise, seek, and obtain external funding to develop, implement, evaluate and translate nursing research to impact patient/family care outcomes at the MGH and beyond.

11. The Yvonne L. Munn Predoctoral Research Grant for PhD Nursing Students

The Yvonne L. Munn Predoctoral Research Grant for PhD Nursing Students supports nurses in PhD programs currently pursuing their dissertation research. This $2,500 grant is merit-based and provides funding for research-related expenses for up to 2 years. Upon completion of the award, it is expected that the recipient will present findings at minimum to the MGH nursing community in both poster and podium formats and submit a manuscript in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. 

 
12. Limited Submission Funding Opportunities

We ask that all MGH Investigators interested in applying for any limited submission award submit a Letter of Intent (see detailed instructions below) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) by the deadline indicated for each award to be considered to receive an institutional nomination.

Process            
Submit a one- to two-page Letter of Intent (LOI) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) via email to ecor@partners.org.  In addition to your LOI, please include an NIH Biosketch.

The letter of intent should include:

  • Name of the Principal Investigator with appropriate contact information
  • A descriptive title of the potential application
  • Brief description of the project
  • Brief description of why you specifically should be selected to receive institutional nomination for this award


If there is more than one MGH investigator interested in applying for each limited submission award, the LOIs will be used to assess candidates and a review and selection process will take place.
