Research News - June 3, 2016

Briefly, the current policy requires: 

• Registration at study initiation (with annual updates) of investigator-initiated clinical trials that meet the FDAAA definition of an ‘Applicable Clinical Trial’ (ACT).
• Aggregate results and adverse events reporting if the ACT involves an approved/cleared drug, biologic, or device.
• Designation of an individual as Responsible Party (RP), usually the study PI, to fulfill ClinicalTrials.gov registration and reporting requirements.
• Designation of substitute RP, typically the Department or Division Chief, when a study PI relocates to another institution or is otherwise unavailable to fulfill RP responsibilities (e.g., deceased). 

Revisions include the following:

• Addition of CMS requirement for ClinicalTrials.gov registration prior to enrolling first subject in order for the hospital to receive payment on claims for items/services provided in the clinical trials
• Clarification the Principal Investigator should be identified as the Responsible Party (RP) in the ClinicalTrials.gov database, RP field
• Multicenter clinical trials contracts must identify the RP of trial and Institutional ClinicalTrials.gov account where record will be managed
• Language identifying that compliance with ClinicalTrials.gov registration and results reporting requirements is a hospital responsibility

The Center for Skeletal Research (CSR), based in the Endocrine Unit at MGH, and funded by a NIAMS P30 grant, is happy to announce its second annual Research Symposium. The goal is to bring together the Boston bone research community for an exciting afternoon of scientific exchange. This year we will again feature talks by two talented leaders of the field from outside the Center.  New this year is a special meeting with Drs. Joan McGowan and Faye Chen for young investigators. We will also be expanding the poster session and will again offer prizes. Posters will be displayed in the Bulfinch Patio Tent. We ask that you register for the meeting so we can get a good sense of the number of attendees in advance and because seating is limited.

Preliminary applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Smith Family Awards for Excellence in Biomedical Research.

What are they?

The Smith Family Awards for Excellence in Biomedical Research
The mission of the Awards Program is to launch the careers of newly independent biomedical researchers with the ultimate goal of achieving medical breakthroughs. The three‐year Award supports newly independent faculty engaged in basic biomedical research. Investigators in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry and engineering) whose projects focus on biomedical science are also encouraged to apply. Clinical trials are outside of the scope of this program however, basic research using human specimens is eligible. In recognition of the importance of research collaboration by the scientific community, collaboration is an additional, but not required, positive ancillary factor. These projects may involve researchers within and/or outside MGH.

MGH is eligible to nominate two candidates.

What is it?
The NIH Director’s Early Independence Award Program supports exceptional investigators who wish to pursue independent research directly after completion of their terminal doctoral/research degree or clinical residency, thereby forgoing the traditional post-doctoral training period and accelerating their entry into an independent research career.

MGH is eligible to nominate two candidates to apply to NIH for this award.

The Harrington Prize for Innovation in Medicine, presented by the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and the Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals - part of The Harrington Project for Discovery & Development, honors the physician-scientist who has moved science forward with notable achievements in innovation, creativity and potential for clinical application.

This annual prize provides the awardee with:

• An unrestricted $20,000 honorarium
• The Harrington Prize Lecture, delivered at the ASCI/AAP Joint Meeting
• A review, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation

New England Pediatric Device Consortium (NEPDC) and the Center for Translation of Rehabilitation of Engineering Advances and Technology (TREAT) are pleased to announce pediatric rehabilitation as the 2016 Target Challenge. NEPDC and TREAT, in partnership with the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Foundation for Physical Therapy, invite grant proposals for the development of novel technologies and improvements to existing technologies with clear potential for commercialization that can be used for pediatric rehabilitation.

Award Amount:  Up to $150,000 and 200 hours of NEPDC resource assistance for 1 year

We ask that all MGH Investigators interested in applying for any limited submission award submit a Letter of Intent (see detailed instructions below) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) by the deadline indicated for each award to be considered to receive an institutional nomination.

Process
Submit a one- to two-page Letter of Intent (LOI) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) via email to ecor@partners.org.  In addition to your LOI, please include an NIH Biosketch.

The letter of intent should include:

• Name of the Principal Investigator with appropriate contact information
• A descriptive title of the potential application
• Brief description of the project
• Brief description of why you specifically should be selected to receive institutional nomination for this award

In the event that there is more than one MGH investigators interested in applying for each limited submission award, the LOIs will be used to assess candidates and a review and selection process will take place.
