1. Nominate Yourself or a Colleague for ECOR Representative

There are two openings for election as a representative from the Research community to the Executive Committee On Research (ECOR). One opening is for a Professor, the other for an Associate Professor.
 
The deadline for nominations is at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 30.

For each open position on the ballot, the ECOR Nominations Review Committee will select three candidates from among the nominated faculty.

2. Core of the Week: CBRC Confocal Microscope Core

CBRC Confocal Microscope Core
Director: Kristin White, PhD
Location: Building 149 13th Street, Charlestown

The CBRC Confocal Microscope Core provides support for confocal microscopy. The core is currently equipped with a Nikon A1SiR confocal equipped with galvo and resonant scanners for high resolution and high speed scanning. A motorized stage facilities data collection at multiple regions during time lapse imaging. A stage incubator is available for long term imaging of mammalian cells. Spectral imaging and unmixing allows users to separate multiple fluorescent proteins in live and fixed tissue. This facility is available on a fee for service basis to trained users from the CBRC and the MGH Community. Training is a two step process, scheduled on an as needed basis. 4. Effort Reporting Period Begins October 1

The next effort reporting period will begin on October 1, covering work performed from April 1 – September 30, 2014. All effort reports must be completed by October 31, 2014. A reminder and additional details for departmental Effort Managers was posted to the Research Navigator on September 17. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Effort Reporting team.

3. Munn Nursing Research Grand Rounds

Thursday, October 2, 1:30-2:30 pm, O’Keeffe Auditorium

“Utilizing Evidence Based Practice to Prevent Constipation in Older, Adult Hospitalized Patients”

Presented by: Andrea H. Thurler, DNP, FNP-BC and Lieba R. Savitt, MSN, RN, ANP-BC (recipients of an Yvonne L. Munn Nursing Research Award in 2011; mentor Deborah D’Avolio, PhD, APRN-BC)

This presentation will discuss their pilot study and lessons learned throughout their research process. They will examine future opportunities for constipation research and practice implementation. There will be an interactive discussion with the audience about their experience and implications for future research and investigators.

Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development at Massachusetts General Hospital (OH-239, 10/1/2017) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The learner must stay for the entire program and submit a completed evaluation to obtain contact hours.

4. MGH New Faculty Orientation

5. Research Faculty Seminar - Responsible Conduct of Research Series: Responsible Authorship

6. New England Symposium on Biomedical Optics

Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm, 65 Lansdowne Street, Room 103A, Cambridge, MA

The Center for Biomedical OCT Research and Translation (CBORT) at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine and MGH is hosting the New England Symposium on Biomedical Optics. The symposium, for trainees including graduate students and research fellows, is intended to promote synergy among the biophotonics community in the Boston area and facilitate networking among young researchers. The presentations and discussion will focus on three main areas within biomedical optics, including: technology development, clinical applications, and optical imaging in biology - with invited speakers from optics groups at Harvard, MIT, Tufts, and BU.

Lunch and cocktails at the conclusion of the event will be provided.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

1. Howard M. Goodman Fellowship 2015

Applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the MGH Howard M. Goodman Fellowship.

What is it?
This is an endowed fellowship established by the MGH Department of Molecular Biology in honor of the founding Chief of the Department, Dr. Howard M. Goodman. The award is intended to further the careers of outstanding independent young scientists who have demonstrated the potential to rise to a leadership position in their chosen field. Independent Fellows, Instructors, and new Assistant Professors from any MGH Department are eligible to apply for this award.

How much is the award?
The award is for two years at $150,000, plus 15% indirect costs, per year and is effective April 1, 2015.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014 - 5:00 PM

2. HMS Foundation Funds

Each year several foundations invite HMS faculty and postdocs to apply for their fellowships and grants, which serve as critical funding at the early stages of a research career. Interested investigators must first apply for the HMS nomination through the HMS Foundation Funds, and a committee will select the final candidates to submit applications to the foundations.

Faculty and postdocs interested in applying for any of the awards listed above can apply for the HMS nomination by submitting an application online no later than October 15, 2014 at 5:00PM. If you are an MGH investigator, you should not apply directly to HMS for several of the funding opportunities offered through the HMS foundation funds annually. Please see the chart located here to determine where to apply and for information on the process.

3. Limited Submission Funding Opportunities

We ask that all MGH Investigators interested in applying for any limited submission award submit a Letter of Intent (see detailed instructions below) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) by the deadline indicated for each award to be considered to receive an institutional nomination.

Process
Submit a one- to two-page Letter of Intent (LOI) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) via email to ecor@partners.org. In addition to your LOI, please include an NIH Biosketch.

The letter of intent should include:
1. Name of the Principal Investigator with appropriate contact information
2. A descriptive title of the potential application
3. Brief description of the project
4. Brief description of why you specifically should be selected to receive institutional nomination for this award

In the event that there is more than one MGH investigators interested in applying for each limited submission award, the LOIs will be used to assess candidates and a review and selection process will take place.
