3. Core of the Week: Peptide/Protein Core

Peptide/Protein Core
Director: Ashok Khatri
Location: 149 13th St. Room #4-314, Charlestown, MA

The primary goal of the Peptide/Protein Core Facility is to provide advanced peptide/protein technology services to the MGH research community. The Core Facility, established originally as a resource for the Endocrine Unit and the Partners AIDS Research Center is now formally established as an institution-wide resource. The Core Facility primarily provides services of peptide synthesis and purification. It also provides protein/peptide sequencing, amino acid analysis and mass spectral analysis. Investigators from throughout the MGH consult with the staff of the Core Facility to facilitate the most effective use of the resources.

EVENTS

1. Steps to Success Education and Career Development Series

Training and Workforce Development is hosting the annual Steps to Success Education and Career Development series during the week of May 19. The series is comprised of three events:

Taking the First Step (May 20, noon to 1 pm, Haber Conference Room): Human Resources staff will share tools and strategies to help employees take the first step towards career success. Topics such as self-assessment, goal setting, managing priorities and career management will be discussed.

Financing Your Education Workshop (May 21, noon to 1 pm, Haber Conference Room): Representatives from the Harvard University Employees Credit Union and the MGH Institute of Health Professions will discuss various options to assist in financing your education.

Education Fair (May 22, noon to 3 pm, Bulfinch Tent): The fair provides one-stop-shopping to explore certificate, undergraduate and graduate clinical and non-clinical programs, including nursing, research administration, inpatient coding, health care policy and administration. Featured schools include Boston University, Bunker Hill Community College, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Northeastern University, Simmons College, Suffolk University and UMass Boston.

2. Orientation Program: Clinical Research Resources at MGH

Thursday, May 22, 11:15am - 4:00pm, Simches 3.120

Are you new to clinical research or planning a research project at MGH?
Orientation Program: Clinical Research Resources at MGH will provide valuable information about the clinical research system at MGH. New investigators and research coordinators/assistants are invited to meet with representatives from Research Management, Partners Clinical Research Office, Partners Human Research Committee, Partners Quality Improvement Program, Clinical Research Program, Clinical Research Center, Research Compliance, Investigational Drug Service and Clinical Research Laboratory Core.

It is highly recommended that attendees complete the CRP’s “Introduction to Clinical Research” and "Good Clinical Practice and Study Management Basics" online modules before attending this course. Topics covered in the online training courses will be reviewed during this session. Please come prepared with your questions.

Lunch will be provided.

3. Considering PCORI Funding? What do you need to know before applying?

So you’ve heard of PCORI and think it’s a potential funding source for your research project. What’s next? What funding opportunities are available through PCORI? How do I get stakeholders engaged? What is the application process? What is the review process like? If I do get the award, can I meet all the milestones and travel requirements? Please join Dr. Andrew Nierenberg as he discusses these topics and outlines the process for applying for funding and what happens after you are funded. Dr. Nierenberg was recently awarded funding from PCORI to create a “Mood Patient-Powered Network.”

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

1. Limited Submission Funding Opportunities

We ask that all MGH Investigators interested in applying for any limited submission award submit a Letter of Intent (see detailed instructions below) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) by the deadline indicated for each award to be considered to receive an institutional nomination.

Process
Submit a one- to two-page Letter of Intent (LOI) to the MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) via email to ecor@partners.org. In addition to your LOI, please include an NIH Biosketch.

The letter of intent should include:
1. Name of the Principal Investigator with appropriate contact information
2. A descriptive title of the potential application
3. Brief description of the project
4. Brief description of why you specifically should be selected to receive institutional nomination for this award

In the event that there is more than one MGH investigators interested in applying each limited submission award, the LOIs will be used to assess candidates and a review and selection process will take place.
