ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. A Message to Our Mac Community Regarding OS X 10.9 Mavericks

On Tuesday, October 22, 2013, Apple announced the availability of their next operating system for Mac computers, OS X 10.9 Mavericks. At this time, it is recommended that you do not upgrade your Mac because some Enterprise software provided by our vendors is not yet compatible. We are awaiting software updates. The PEAS (Partners Enterprise Apple Support) testing team has uncovered the following issues so far:
Email: Symantec's Enterprise Vault (EV) plug-in for Outlook 2011. Mavericks users would be limited to searching the vault in a web browser only, and would not have access to the EV toolbar.
VPN: The Cisco AnyConnect software used for remotely logging into the Partners network. Mavericks users may have intermittent connectivity issues with frequent drops and reconnects required.

We will continue to work with our vendors to ensure updates are released in a timely manner. If you’re interested in news about the PEAS program and other Apple support topics at Partners, subscribe to our newsletter for the latest information and updates.

2. Core of the Week: XtremeCT Core

XtremeCT Core
Director: Joel S. Finkelstein, M.D.
Location: 10 Emerson Place Suite 1, Boston, MA

The High Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) Core Facility offers measurements of the microscopic internal structure of cortical and trabecular bone in the distal radius and tibia. Additionally, the HR-pQCT Core Facility offers Finite Element Analysis to estimate key biomechanical properties of the bone including failure load and stiffness.

By scanning the distal radius and tibia, the HR-pQCT Core can measure a variety of important parameters reflecting the integrity of cortical and trabecular bone. This information cannot be determined using standard clinical imaging techniques such as dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA). A scanning appointment is a 30 minute addition to a clinical research visit and involves less radiation exposure than traditional bone densitometry. With applications for both cross-sectional and longitudinal research, investigators have employed our facilities and expertise to study a variety of bone-related diseases with participants ranging in age from children to the elderly.

The goal of the HR-pQCT Core is to provide facilities and personnel on a per study basis, allowing investigators access to important information about bone structure and function without requiring special expertise and equipment.

1. HMS Faculty Seminar- Improving Case Presentations through Effective Feedback

Thursday, November 7, 2013, 12:00-1:00 pm

The Office for Clinical Careers presents a seminar for MGH faculty with HMS academic appointments.

This session will help you set the framework for case presentations and deliver feedback more effectively. During this interactive seminar, you will gain an understanding of the challenges and obstacles faced when shaping a trainee's case presentations and delivering feedback. In addition, you will benchmark your own style of delivering feedback against patterns discussed in the literature and learn how to improve the quality of feedback you provide in your role as a teacher.

Communication Series: Improving Case Presentations through Effective Feedback
Facilitators:
Cynthia Cooper, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine
Theodore Stern, MD, Director, Office for Clinical Careers; Ned H. Cassem Professor of Psychiatry in the Field of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation

Faculty with HMS academic appointments please register by Monday, October 28, 2013: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ImprovingCasePresentations

3. MGH/BIDMC CSIBD Research Club Meeting

Thursday, October 31, 4:30 PM; MGH, O'Keefe Auditorium (Blake Building, 1st Floor)

Our guest speaker will be Zhijian 'James' Chen, Ph.D., George I. MacGregor Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Medicine, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

The title of his presentation will be The Dark Side of DNA: Innate Immune Sensing of Cytosolic DNA.

Abstract:
The presence of DNA and aberrant RNA in the cytoplasm is a danger signal that alerts the host immune system to eliminate microbial infections, but inappropriate activation of these pathways can also lead to autoimmune diseases. In this seminar, I will first summarize our work on the biochemical dissection of the RIG-I pathway, which detects microbial RNA in the cytoplasm, and then focus on the more recent work on the discovery of a new innate sensor of cytosolic DNA and a novel second messenger that triggers the production of type-I interferons and other inflammatory cytokines.

Refreshments will be served.

Please send any updates for the email distribution list to Alisha Wilkinson at arwilkinson@partners.org.
