ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. For MGH Postdocs – Info Needed for Postdoc Peer Editing Network

The ORCD is investigating ways to assist MGH postdoctoral fellows in the preparation of scientific manuscripts. The following survey will be used to determine the need and feasibility of a Peer Editing Network.  Research fellows may benefit from peer editing in two ways: first, those with editing needs can get valuable feedback to improve the quality of their manuscripts; second, research fellows with interest and skills in editing can gain experience as peer editors.

We kindly request that all research fellows fill out this brief survey so that we can understand your editing needs and your potential interest in serving as a peer editor.  Please click here to take the survey by Monday, January 9, 2017.

2. An Update Regarding Apple's macOS Sierra

With the release of macOS Sierra 10.12.2 you may now upgrade to this latest version. Please note that if you choose to upgrade, you must update the following applications after upgrading to ensure Partners services will continue to function… click for more.

RSVP NOW: www.omega3society.org (Free Registration)

The field of omega-3 research has evolved rapidly in recent years and its potential applications have become more diverse and significant for public health. At the same time, new challenges and issues have emerged in both the scientific and public acceptance of omega-3.
The aim of the International Society for Omega-3 Research (ISOR) is to bring together highly active investigators in the field, particularly young scientists, interested in omega-3. To exchange ideas/thoughts, establish collaborations, adopt new technologies, and most importantly, promote and maintain a high standard of omega-3 research. The inaugural ISOR symposium will provide a platform for sharing research progress from the up-and-coming generation of investigators and highlight the frontier if the field of omega-3.

Main topics include:

  • Current Challenges and Opportunities for Omega-3 Research
  • Lipidomics and Biomarker Discovery
  • Unique Animal Models for Omega-3 Research
  • Novel Mechanisms for the Action of Omega-3 Metabolites
  • Gut Microbiota and Chronic Disease
  • New Clinical Applications for Omega-3

5. IRB Issues for the Bench and Desk Scientist

Wednesday, February 1, 2:00 – 3:30pm, Simches Room 3.110

Sponsored by the MGH Division of Clinical Research and the Human Research Committee

Elizabeth Hohmann, MD, Chair and Physician Director, Partners Human Research Committee

The purpose of this seminar is to discuss ethical, regulatory, and institutional issues relevant to analysis limited to human biological samples and medical records, survey and questionnaire studies, and databases. Some of the questions and topics that will be covered include:

  • What needs IRB Review?  What is exempt? What is “not human subjects research?”
  • What is "Minimal Risk?"
  • What is expedited review, and what research qualifies for expedited review?
  • What is a "secondary use" of data or biological samples?
  • How to effectively provide all information the IRB needs to review your project promptly!
  • Outside collaborations - sharing your data and specimens properly.
  • Pitfalls and problems to avoid.

This lecture is strongly recommended for new research fellows (both MD's and PhD's using human samples and data) and study coordinators, though all investigators and study staff, experienced or new will benefit, if you have not previously attended.

Registration is required. Please contact Tiereny Morrison-Rohlfs with questions.

This program meets the requirements of the Board of Registration in Nursing, at 244 CMR 5.00, for 1 contact hour of nursing continuing education.

RCR Eligibility: Completion of this course will fulfill one lecture/discussion requirement.

6. What Does the IRB Really Want? How to Write a Human Studies Protocol

Thursday, February 9, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, Simches 3.110

Sponsored by the MGH Division of Clinical Research and the Human Research Committee

Elizabeth Hohmann, M.D., Chair and Physician Director, Partners Human Research Committee

This practical lecture addresses "Full Review Protocols" - those of more than minimal risk which must be considered at a convened meeting of the IRB. It provides practical advice for those preparing protocols for IRB review. What is the IRB; how does it work; what is the best way to interact with it? Understand common pitfalls and errors in submissions and how to avoid them. Find out exactly what the IRB needs to review your study, and how to best and most effectively present your scientific, ethical, and logistical information to the IRB.

This lecture is designed for new research fellows and professional staff, research nurses and study coordinators submitting materials to the IRB.

Registration is required. Contact Tiereny Morrison-Rohlfs  with questions.

This program meets the requirements of the Board of Registration in Nursing, at 244 CMR 5.00, for 1.5 contact hours of nursing continuing education.

RCR Eligibility: Completion of this course will fulfill one lecture/discussion requirement.
